Healthy Eating Pyramid is the foundation of your daily exercise and weight control. It has a strong influence in staying healthy.
The logic is simple because exercise and weight control is linked to each other with an uncomplicated rule of balancing energy.

Weight change = calories in - calories out

When you burn as many calories each day as you take it, there is nothing would be left storing in your fat cells, and your weight remains the same. However, if you eat more than you burn, then you will end up adding more fats and pounds in your body.

Let us take a look at the bricks in the Healthy Eating Pyramid;

Whole Grains will give us carbohydrates such as oatmeal, whole-wheat bread, and brown rice. Our body needs carbohydrates that give us energy.

Healthy Fats and Oils is surprisingly at the near base, indicating that it's okay to have it although not all types of fats are allowed but the healthy fats like olive, canola, soy, corn, sunflower, peanut and other vegetable oils only.

Vegetables and Fruits has an ample advantage. It will help you to decrease the chances of heart attack or stroke, protecting you to some types of cancer, lowering your blood pressure and helping you to avoid some intestinal ailment and can guard you against muscular degeneration. Potatoes are not counted as the vegetable because it has the same effect on blood sugar like refined grains and sweets, and uses sparingly in the Healthy Eating Pyramid.

Nuts, Seeds, Beans, and Tofu are plant foods that is excellent source of fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals like black beans, garbanzos, lentils, etc. and some other nuts that contains healthy fats like almonds, walnuts, peanuts, etc. are good for your heart. Eating this kind of beans and nuts instead of red meat or process meat can help you lowering the risk of having heart disease and diabetes.

Fish, Poultry, and Eggs are also important for it can as well be the source of protein. Eating fish can reduce heart disease while chicken are can be low saturated fat.  An egg a day is fine but for people with diabetes or heart disease should only have it for three times a week.

Dairy or Vitamin D and Calcium will help us to have strong bones. However, we should limit it in 1 to 2 servings per day only. High dairy intakes can be associated will increase the risk of ovarian cancers or fatal prostate.
Nevertheless, you can get calcium by taking calcium supplements and vitamin D to meet your daily needs.

Red Meat, Processed Meat, Butter, Refined Grains, Potatoes, Sugary Drinks and Sweets, and Salts are all staples at the top because it can cause increases in blood sugar which can be lead to weight gain, diabetes, hear disease and other chronic diseases.

Just remember the basic guidelines in Healthy Eating Pyramid that healthy diet is having more foods from the base of the pyramid than from the higher levels of the pyramid.  Choosing a variety of fresh, whole foods from the groups will ensure you are getting the right nutrients that you need and the only foods that are off-limits are those who are on top of the pyramids.

It was such a humid day and whenever the time like this comes, you liked to stop what you are doing and had a sleep first because your body is pulling you to be lazy. A week before, my son suffers from joint pain and develops small red marks over his skin on his feet. I get worried so I bring him in the hospital to know what this thing is all about. We first thought it was due to his careless while playing because he said he's been tripped on the root of a tree at school one Friday afternoon and thinking that maybe there is a fracture or something that is why it was swollen.  Still the red mark is a puzzle to me.

So we rush to the hospital the following morning to see the pediatrician, and the doctor referred us to the surgery room. We had his foot x-ray done but nothing had seen in the results. The marks become more and more when the day pass until his doctor suspected that it's Henorch Schonlein Purpura.  The doctor requests different blood test, urinalysis, and fecalysis as well.

Henoch Schonlein Purpura is a type of vasculitis or a form of inflammation of the blood vessel. It affects the small blood vessels called capillaries in the skin and sometimes the kidney.  It occurs in the skin rash, mostly in lower extremities associated with joint inflammation like arthritis, abdominal pain and sometimes a kidney disorder.

The causes of bleeding of skin, joints, abdomen and kidney are due to body's small vessels that have been inflamed. It may be a result if overzealous immune system which responds inappropriately. There is no specific thing why this occurs.

The syndrome is commonly seen in children ages 2 to 10 years of age, but it can also affect people in different age.  It is more common in boys and very rarely in girls. It was said that most people who had Henoch Schonlein Purpura had an upper respiratory illness in the past weeks before it occurs.

There is no specific medication for this because most cases are getting better on its own without any treatment. When the Henoch Schonlein Purpura is gone, usually takes four to six weeks. Ibuprofen is given as the pain reliever but steroids can be given if the pain is intolerable. It will come back after four months from the first it occurs, but nothing will follow after this.

We just hope that my baby had a strong immune system to fight this and with gods will I know that my son will cure and get well.

More people did not know exactly what they are going to do when they are decided to have an exercise in their life. Some go to gym and other do it by their own.  Without knowing the proper things to do they even don't care if they're doing is right or wrong and so, I list the 10 tips that people should know before going to start their exercise. 1. Consult with Doctor before starting any exercise program.

2. Know your exercise capacity. It pays to know where you can start off with your exercise.

3. Go for "fat loss" instead of "weight loss".

4. Engage in Resistance training at least 3x per week.

5. Cardio exercises at leasr 30 mins every day.

6. Start with 3 sets with 10-15 reps per set.

7. Challenge yourself every training day. This will give your body something to anticipate everytime.

8. Keep yourself hydrated.

9. Track yourself. Keep a journal of yur progress to see where you come from and appreciate the achievements.

Last year Rogin-E Last Man Running was become extraordinary with the competitive participants who finish the race and tried the challenge of Rogin-E. This year another race will endure as The Rogin-E Last Man Running 2 event will be on March 24, 2012 at Bonificaio Global City, Taguig.

There will be three categories for the race. This are the 5+2K Race, 10 + 4K Race,and the certerpiece event which will be the Rogin-E's Last Man Running (LMR) challenge which is the 7-hour marathon. There will be a limited number of slots per race.

To register, you can visit www.roginelmr.com or visit Last Man Running 2 registration booths at the following venues such as Olympic Village in Trinoma, ATC, Robinsons Pioneer, Robinsons Ermita and in R.O.X. Bonifacio High Street.

For walk-in participants, you can registere on the day of the event provided that you will be register at least one hour before your chosen race category will start. For LMR the gun starts is 2:00am, 10+4K will be 5:30am and the 5+2K will be 6:00am.


Participants must fill up the registration form which covers a waiver of liability and pay the correspnding race fee as follows;

LMR        -  P1, 200
5 + 2K    -  P600  

10 + 4K  -  P800


All participants will have their own race kit that includes a singlet, timing chip, race bib and metal stub (meal can be claimed at the breafast banchetto.
For the 5+2K and 10+4K Races, there will be several convergent points with LMR, particularly near the finishing stretch. Runners can stop at the 5K/10K mark but they can also take on the challenge of going futher for additional 2K or 4K. The top male and female racer who will finish the race will receive the cash prizes of P5,000 each for 5+2K race and P10,000 each for the 10+4K race.


For LMR, particiapnts must check in 30 minutes before the gun start. Should submit additional requirements such as proof of participation in full marathon which is 42.195km or long within 6 months prior to LMR, medical certificate from a physician that they can participate in the competition for both LMR/LWR category.
The male and female runner who will sustain the nominated pace throughout the race will be qualified. There will be a marker every 100m along the perimeter of the route. There will be handed a colored strings for every hour they successfully complete. During the run at no time the LMR runners allowed to stop, except for the following cases:: lavatory break, to hyrdrate at hydration stations, to eat at carboloading stations, sponge bath, or to fix running gear. They MUST rejoin the RUNNING GROUP and maintain the current nominated pace. Any other reason for stopping will subject the LMR contender to disqualification.

LMR runners may withdraw from the race at any time during the 7-hour period. Upon withdrawal, all colored strings given during his/her participation in the run will be collected by the nearest race marshal. Likewise, all runners who were swept off by race marshals must surrender their strings.  organizers and its appointed race officials reserve the right to declare any LMR contender unfit to continue with the run upon recommendation of the race medical team.
There will be water aid stations every 2Kms,sports drink will be made available to runners every 5kms, carboloading stations will be available after the fifth hour and portalets will be also visible along the race route.

At exactly 7 hours after gun start, all race marshals will simultaneously blow their whistles to signal the end of the endurance race. All participants of LMR who are still in competition will be assisted right away by the most proximate race marshal. His/her race bib number and exact location (from the nearest distance marker) will then be recorded and subsequently submitted to the chief race judge to determine LMR and LWR winners. Video cameras and gadgets will be on standby in case the race will be very close up to the finish line. The Last Man Running will be awarded a trip to Beijing, China and entry to the Great Wall Marathon worth P150,000. The Last Woman Running will receive a cash award of P20,000.
